The package includes Tom Wilsonās original liner notes, plus insightful new essays by jazz historianBen Young, as well as by Irwin Chusid, who is also a journalist, radio personality, and author.Ā
Engineered byĀ Paul Cady, the sessions featured nine players, including Ra on piano,Ā Bernard McKinneyĀ (later known asĀ Kiane Zawadi, on trombone and euphonium),Ā Marshall AllenĀ (alto sax, flute, among other reed instruments),Ā John GilmoreĀ (tenor sax, bass clarinet),Ā Pat PatrickĀ (bass saxophone),Ā Ronnie BoykinsĀ (bass),Ā Willie JonesĀ (drums),Ā Leah AnandaĀ (conga), andĀ Ricky MurrayĀ (vocals).
Recorded in just one day, onĀ October 10, 1961,Ā The Futuristic Sounds of Sun RaĀ featured 11 tracks.Ā Among the selections is the Latin-influenced opener,Ā āBassism,āĀ the bluesyĀ āOf Sounds and Something Else,āĀ and the aptly named,Ā āWhatās That?,āĀ which breaks into a four-saxophone improvisation, stands out as an example of Raās early experimental work.
