The opening notes of Melvins’ seventh full-length release have guitarist Buzz Osborne unwinding his guitar strings towards an inky sludge tuning, setting the stage for one of the Pacific Northwest legends’ heaviest efforts. Rowdy, Southern blues-metal send up “Revolve” may stand as one of the trio’s catchiest — and thus most popular — songs, but Stoner Witch is still profoundly weird in all the right places. From its gloom-moshed “Skweetis,” to the Spaghetti Western whistling passages of “Roadbull” to the Bud-spitting punk-strumental “Junebug,” there’s an inspired zaniness to the album that demands to be spun on repeat.
