BORIS by Ebru Yıldız features the Japanese band Boris in collaboration with photographer Ebru Yıldız.

In 2024 Boris set out on a North American tour called ā€œAmplifier Worship Service,ā€ performing their monolithic albumĀ Amplifier Worship (1998) in full each night. Having worked with Boris in the creation of press images surrounding the release of their collaborative album with Uniform (Bright New Disease, 2023), photographer Ebru Yıldız connected with the band for a few days during the northeast leg of the tour to photograph the shows, make portraits of the band and document the in-between moments on tour.

The world that Boris creates to present their inimitable music is holistic: styling, clothing, stage design, lighting, are all deeply considered and thoughtfully presented to communicate not just music, but an all-consuming world. The resulting photographs in BORIS are representative of Yıldız’s distinctive style, blurring the lines between portraiture and documentation and reflecting the quiet dedication of the members of the band as they present their singular and powerful music. Yıldız creates images that represent the gentleness of each band member in the quieter moments, contrasted with the ferocity and enormity of the music they create on stage.

BORIS marks a continuation of Yıldız’s Phosphene zine series in which she presents a long-form photographic essay with each issue. Self-published by Yıldız since 2018, What Remains is thrilled to continue this series in an elevated format.

BORIS is offered in two variants: a standard edition of 450 and a special edition of 50 which includes the What Remains bookplate designed by David V. D’Andrea and silkscreened by Kayrock Screenprinting on the inside back cover in silver ink + signed and numbered by the photographer + wax seal.
