When it comes to English extreme-metal albums released in 1988, Carcass’s Reek of Putrefaction and Napalm Death’s From Enslavement to Obliteration understandably receive a ton of praise, but Bolt Thrower’s bullet-spraying debut should be heralded as an equally raucous achievement. In Battle There is No Law! is the group’s fastest and grindiest opus, but even at their quickest speeds, Bolt Thrower’s signature churn — and their unfathomably beefy guitar tones — still shine through the punkish mayhem. It’s a bloody mess of the highest order.
